Mountain Rustic Home
A Private Escape in St. Louis County
Situated on a three-acre lot in Huntleigh, Missouri, this mountain rustic home has privacy on all sides. After listening to the owners of this project and understanding their love of the outdoors, we developed a creative solution to fit their needs. Utilizing the natural elements existing on the site–a pond and a hill–we oriented the home in a way that allows for privacy on all sides. We also designed the shape of the home and the surrounding landscape elements to frame views of the site while obscuring views of neighbors.
The orientation of the home also allowed us to capture natural light throughout the interior. This was a challenge because a traditional mountain rustic home typically features heavy walls, stone and timber elements. These elements don’t generally allow for large areas of glazing. Our solution was to creatively place the windows throughout the home in a way that was still authentic to the style of the home. Specifically, we incorporated high ceilings in rooms and hallways, instead of leaving the volume as attic space, then we added dormer windows high on the wall to rain light down from above. The end result was ample natural light in every space of the home.
The interior of the project features functional spaces ideal for daily living. Sprawling 7,000 square feet, there are five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and three half bathrooms. The kitchen, dining and family room are the central core of the home with all other spaces radiating from these areas. Guests are greeted at the entry foyer by a large masonry see-through fireplace and a groin vaulted ceiling. Other stand-out features incorporated include a second fireplace in the music room, a wine room, an open-concept basement for entertaining, a wood-paneled office and a custom gym surrounded by floor to ceiling windows.
