Jon Metheny
Director of Design and Partner
Jon seemed destined to be an architect from an early age. In grade school, he was often found sketching floor plans of his friends’ homes, convinced that their parents “would want these.” Growing up with curiosity and creativity but limited means, Jon’s path became clear when a high school Drafting and Construction Science teacher recognized his talent and encouraged him to apply to Kansas State University. Six years later he graduated from KSU’s School of Architecture in 1995 and began his career with respected Kansas City architects.
His first mentor, Homer Williams, hired him as a college intern and after graduating had him return to join his firm full-time. Williams, owner of the Bott House—one of only two Frank Lloyd Wright homes in Kansas City—often entrusted Jon with the house while traveling with his wife. Immersed in the architecture, Jon spent hours studying, sketching, and learning from the house’s design—a priceless education that sparked his lifelong admiration for Wright and modern architecture.
Over the years, Jon has traveled the country exploring the works of Wright, Richard Neutra, Paul Rudolph, and Richard Meier, developing his own design philosophy grounded in natural materials, spatial harmony, and modern form. With more than 30 years of experience, he founded his own practice, Metheny Architects, in 2020 before joining Schaub Projects Architecture + Design as Director of Design and Partner. Jon is licensed in Illinois, Missouri, and Florida.
Outside the studio, Jon is an avid outdoorsman. He enjoys hiking and camping in Colorado, kayaking and fishing Missouri’s waters, and RV camping with his son, Moses, or Rhonda, his girlfriend. Time spent in nature continues to inspire his work and love of design.
