David J. Schaub
Founder and Managing Partner
David Schaub comes from a long line of craftsmen. His father was a master cabinetmaker, while his grandfather and great-grandfather were both master woodcarvers. In fact, family history holds that his great-grandfather served as the favored woodcarver to King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the nineteenth century—an artistic legacy that continues to inspire David’s own dedication to craft and detail.
David began his career as a drafter for a civil and structural engineering firm while still in college, spending his summers in the field conducting surveys and soil tests. Initially studying architectural technology and drafting with the intention of becoming an engineer, his path shifted when he took a position in an architect’s office. There, he discovered his true passion for architecture and design. Recognizing his artistic eye and natural design sensibility, the firm’s architects encouraged him to pursue licensure, and David soon advanced to become one of their lead project designers.
After several years of professional experience, David founded his own firm, Schaub Design Group, Inc., specializing in high-end custom estate homes and light commercial projects. His work quickly earned recognition at both the local and national levels, including design awards and features in multiple publications. He also authored articles on architecture and design, sharing insights from his practice and experience.
Following the challenges of the Great Recession (2008), David continued to lead his firm with resilience and innovation. In 2012, he partnered with architect Robert Srote to form Schaub+Srote Architects (SSA), a multidisciplinary firm that expanded to include commercial architecture, interior design, and structural engineering. After six successful years, David chose to pursue a more personal and client-centered vision for his practice. In 2018, he sold his interest in SSA and founded Schaub Projects Architecture + Design, where his focus remains on creativity, craftsmanship, and meaningful client relationships.
Outside of architecture, David has always been deeply engaged with his community. A resident of St. Louis, he volunteered for ten years with his local fire department, serving as a firefighter/engineer and certified emergency medical technician.
David and his wife, Janet, have been married for over thirty years and have one grown son. When he’s not in the studio, David enjoys traveling, photography, music (with a soft spot for hard rock), movies—especially comedies, and tending to their vegetable and flower gardens. He also collects political memorabilia and values time spent with family and friends.
